Renewable energy company Sonnedix has acquired a 260MW battery energy storage system (BESS) portfolio in Tuscania, Italy.

The portfolio consists of two neighbouring stand-alone battery energy storage projects, one with a capacity of 160MW/four hours and the other with 100MW/four hours, both purchased from Sphera Energy.

This acquisition brings Sonnedix's total BESS portfolio to approximately 2.8GW.

The company, which has 11GW of total renewable energy capacity, continues to expand its footprint in Italy, a market that has seen considerable growth in the energy storage sector.

Sonnedix CEO Axel Thiemann said: "We took our first step into battery storage in other Italian regions last year. Now we are building on that with real scale in Tuscania.

"Batteries let us do more with the power we are already generating, storing it and deploying it when it is needed most.

"Hybridisation and optimisation are the direction our whole portfolio is heading, and with our long-term footprint and deep expertise in the region, Italy is well placed to lead the way."

In March 2026, Sonnedix acquired six solar photovoltaic plants supported by long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), bringing the company's total installed capacity in Italy to more than 1GW.

Sonnedix reports an overall portfolio of 11GW, with more than 1GW under construction, 4.8GW actively generating power and a 5GW pipeline of projects in development.

The company has operations in Chile, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Poland, Portugal, Spain and the UK.

In April, Sonnedix signed three PPAs with Copec EMOAC for the Librillo project, a 117MW stand-alone BESS in Taltal in the Antofagasta region of Chile.

The project can supply 643.8MW-hours of energy for five hours each day.

The agreements will allow Copec EMOAC to add night-time energy to its portfolio using Sonnedix's BESS, providing a dependable and flexible power supply.
