America has ambitions for the Arctic that may even include invading Greenland. But when you analyze the satellite imagery and shipping trackers, there's only one winner in the melting Far North: Russia.

While the US has, in places, left bases to rot, strongman Vladimir Putin has established trade routes and military bases that are projecting power right across the not-so-frozen Arctic.

China, too, is looking to extend its influence in the region, while Greenlanders, threatened by President Donald Trump's rhetoric around invasion or compulsory purchase, are making it clear that the world's largest island is not for the taking.
