A sudden and extensive power outage swept across Spain and Portugal on Monday, leaving millions without electricity and triggering major disruptions in transportation, telecommunications, and healthcare services.
The blackout, which struck late Monday morning, paralyzed key airports such as Madrid’s Barajas and Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado, grounding flights and halting metro services in both capitals. Telecom networks also failed, leaving residents cut off from mobile communication. Flights to the region from Brussels and other European cities were cancelled, stranding hundreds of travelers across the Iberian Peninsula.
Hospitals, including Madrid’s La Paz and facilities in Portugal, were forced to cancel surgeries. In Setúbal, backup generators operated critical departments, though water and internet services remained down.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited Red Eléctrica’s control center, while the European Commission confirmed it is working closely with both nations and ENTSO-E to investigate the cause and assist in recovery. By Monday afternoon, partial power restoration had begun in parts of Spain and France, though officials warned full recovery could take several more hours.
Although authorities are still investigating the cause, possibilities range from a fire damaging a high-voltage line in southwest France to a potential cyberattack. However, no conclusive evidence has yet been found.
Local businesses voiced concern over mounting losses. “Nobody expected this,” said Juan Muñoz, a butcher in Madrid. “If it lasts hours, we’ll lose everything.” Similarly, an ice cream shop worker warned of major spoilage unless power returned soon.
Experts say the outage’s scale suggests a significant systems failure or interconnected grid fault. While power is gradually returning, the event has raised serious questions about infrastructure resilience across Europe.
